After a strong first half of play, the DePauw University Tigers’ men’s lacrosse team fell to the Rhodes College Lynx with a final score of 9-19 on Feb. 17 in their season opener.

The Tigers’ first half of play wasn’t indicative of the final score as they nearly matched the Lynx, ending the half with a score of 8-7 with Rhodes leading. The single score difference was quickly altered as Rhodes came out in the third quarter with a shut out of six goals to DePauw’s zero. Even after scoring two goals in the final quarter of regulation, the Tigers still came up short as Rhodes scored an additional five goals.

The leading scorers for the Tigers were first-year midfielder William Roberts and junior attackman Steen Jorgensen, as they both tallied a hat-trick while junior attackman William Dorger scored twice. Junior defenseman Donny Bleifuss scored once.

DePauw led the game with 44 shots to Rhodes’ 40, but the Lynx topped the stat sheet in ground balls, face off wins and clears.

First-year Ben Davis led the team with two assists with junior Nate Greenberg and Jorgensen both picking up one.

The Lynx entered the game with a 41 man roster compared to DePauw’s 25.  Rhodes’ leading scorer, Ryan Fennelly, ended the game on a four goal season opener while JJ Hoots racked up a game leading seven ground balls.

The Tigers come back on Feb. 24 to continue their home game streak when they host Kalamazoo College at 1 p.m.
