Lee Tenzer All In Fore DePauw

After serving DePauw University and the Greencastle community since 1955, Windy Hill Country Club has a new owner and a new name. DePauw alum Lee Tenzer ‘64, who is a current member of DePauw University’s Board of Trustees and retired owner of LETCO, has bought and renamed the facility Tiger Pointe Country Club.

Tenzer has also hired Vince Lazar, head golf coach at DePauw University for twenty-one years, who will serve as general manager and director of golf.

“We now have a guaranteed practice facility for the foreseeable future,” Lazar said. “I can now control the facility that will benefit our players.”

Lazar will also oversee any new construction and design to the facility. Tenzer has plans to give Greencastle’s only golf course a new look and this is clear by the steps he has taken early in the process.

“Lee Tenzer has already purchased over $2,000 in new maintenance equipment,” Lazar said. “The plan is to level the clubhouse, along with all other buildings, expect for maintenance.”

The transition from Windy Hill to Tiger Pointe is clearly bringing a lot of change, and the reaction from Lazar’s players has been nothing but positive. Kinder Jones, a sophmore on the team, is eager for the many upgrades to come.

“When I first heard about it, I was very excited for the improvements that will be made to the course,” Jones said.  “It will help with our game individually and with recruiting.”

Luis Esteban, a junior on the team, had similar comments to say about the facility.

“It was a good place to practice,” said Esteban. “The atmosphere could have been better and the changes will definitely help with that.”

Along with its new name, Tiger Pointe will also become semi-private.

“People can join and have membership, which will include benefits,” Lazar said. “It is also open to the public.”

Lazar is looking for both the public and the University to utilize Tiger Pointe Country Club in a variety of ways. It should no longer be viewed as simply a golf course.

“It will be a pro shop and event center combined,” Lazar said.

Windy Hill Country Club had served the community and had been home to DePauw’s golf teams for over sixty years, and Lee Tenzer did not want to see this come to an end. It was a private facility and membership had been decreasing steadily over the years, and this eventually lead to bankruptcy for Windy Hill.

“Lee Tenzer believes this is necessary for the community to have, and he is committed to making it better,” Lazar said.

Members of the golf team enjoyed the golf course in the past and appreciated the opportunity it gives students to play the sport, including sophomore Kinder Jones.  “It’s close to campus and always in good shape, [as well as], challenging for not only to the average golfer, but to our team as well.”

The course will be closing down October 1st to commence the construction and new design of Tiger Pointe Country Club, and hopes to reopen in either March or April.
