Located in the center of Greencastle, Jake’s Barber Co. has evolved into more than just a decent barbershop. It is now a space that people genuinely want to visit.
Jake Trexler, the owner, had no intention of becoming a barber. He got the idea from his work as a pastor, where he was drawn to the human side of ministry and wanted to explore that same energy in a more creative and hands-on setting. He realized that barbering satisfied both requirements.
“Putting the two together made sense to me,” he remarked.
It wasn’t exactly planned to open in Greencastle either. The right doors kept opening, even though Trexler and his wife had no intention of starting a business here. The solution was evident by the time they assessed their situation. “Countless opportunities presented themselves and it was clear it was our next right step,” Trexler remarked. “We love our community.”
A Shop That Feels Like Home
The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into Jake’s Barber Co. is that it doesn’t feel like a transaction. Trexler sums up the mood as “like coming home.” Even if it’s their first time, customers are seen, heard and treated like regulars as soon as they walk through the door.
This is intentional, as the store is more than just a business to Trexler. “That type of place is what I have always wanted in work,” he remarked, referring to the location where he meets his friends. Another feature that distinguishes Trexler’s from the competition is their ability to cut all types of hair.
Trexler genuinely cares about both Greencastle locals and students who frequent the store. He wants to know what students are pursuing and where they are from and also why longtime Greencastle residents adore this town.
The DePauw Connection
Since moving to Greencastle in 2019, Trexler has been connected to DePauw University. However, it was Brady Smith, a member of the men’s soccer team at DePauw, who truly helped to shape his relationship with the school’s community. “He saw the vision of my work and became a huge advocate for our shop,” Trexler said. “I am appreciative of him and his help in starting and expanding Jake’s Barber Co.”
That initial bond developed into something more. Now that Trexler and his spouse frequently attend DePauw events, they have developed genuine connections with students on campus. As a direct result, the store offers a DePauw student discount.
“We see you and love having you in Greencastle,” Trexler remarked.
The Harder Side of a Small Business
This kind of personal shop has its own expenses. The most difficult aspect of running a business, according to Trexler, is not the work itself but rather learning to take a break from it. “It feels like we are always on,” he said. “It is crucial that we occasionally take a break and recharge.”
It’s an honest admission that most small business owners will recognize right away. As of right now, Jake’s Barber Co. continues to expand and maintain a full schedule. Trexler’s advice is straightforward: make reservations in advance. “We look forward to seeing you.”
