Editor's Note: This press release was written and submitted by Executive Director of the Putnam County Museum, Lisa Harris Mock. She shared with The DePauw that DePauw students from Sigma Nu fraternity helped produce this exhibition.
In conjunction with Heirloom Coverlets from Private Collections, the Putnam
County Museum in Greencastle is inviting the public to bring their own woven
coverlets to “show.” Commentary from weaver and curator Jennifer Johnson and
Connor Prairie staff member Michelle Evans will be the “tell” portion of the
program.
On Sunday afternoon, November 12, the doors will open at 2:00 p.m. and the program
will begin at 2:30 p.m. You do not have to bring a coverlet to attend. If you have a
coverlet and wish to participate, please phone the Museum at 765 653-8419 or
email info@putnamcountymuseum.org.
Heirloom Coverlets from Private Collections features more than thirty coverlets,
many from the 1840s and ‘50s, including examples of both geometric overshot
weaving and fancy Jacquard-loomed coverlets, produced in Indiana and elsewhere.
Ten of the fanciest are on loan from the renowned collection of John and Janet
Simmermaker, of Winamac, Indiana.
Viewers and attendees will receive complimentary catalogues for Heirloom Coverlets that include a history of the weavers’ lives and work, and a guide to the exhibition, with full-color photographs. There is no charge for the Show and Tell program, for viewing the exhibition, or for the catalogues, although donations are appreciated.
This exhibition is sponsored by Almost Home Restaurant, Greene Realty and
Headly Do It Best Hardware. Additional support comes from Museum Members
and the Putnam County Community Foundation.
Heirloom Coverlets will be on display through January 19, 2024. Hours are weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sundays 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. After-hours and Saturday viewings may be arranged by calling the museum. The Museum is located at 1105 North Jackson Street in Greencastle, Indiana 46135.
