DePauw Athletics inducted six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 8, includings women’s basketball player Amy Argetsinger Newman ‘05. During Argetsinger Newman’s collegiate career, she was a two-time conference ‘Player of the Year’ award recipient and a former all-time leading scorer for the team.
Argetsinger Newman was nominated by Women’s Basketball Coach Kris Huffman who described her as a quiet yet competitive athlete. “She hated to lose more than she enjoyed winning,” Huffman said.
Huffman attributed Argetsinger Newman’s success as a player to her offensive strength which made her difficult to guard and a valuable asset for the team. “Amy was an impact player from the minute she stepped on campus,” Huffman said.
Athletic Director Stevie Baker-Watson also believed Argetsinger Newman to be well deserving of the accolade applauding a speech Argetsinger Newman gave at a dinner held for the inductees.
Baker-Watson mentioned how Argetsinger Newman humbly described the valuable skills she got from being a DePauw student athlete like time management, communication skills and learning how to be coached.
On her own induction, Argetsinger Newman described the honor to not only be a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame but also to act as a role model for current members of the women’s basketball team.
“It was almost like coming full circle,” said Argetsinger Newman regarding her transition from athlete to role model. Argetsinger Newman said that she is happy to have the chance to inspire current athletes who are where she was not long ago.
Being a member of a team, Argetsinger Newman explained the lessons she learned on the team and the experiences she gained from it. “Each player I played with over my four years influenced me in one way or another” said Argetsinger Newman.
Argetsinger Newman also mentioned how close she became with her teammates and the fun she had getting to know them. “It was so much more than basketball” Argetsinger Newman said.
She also explained how Coach Huffman helped to weave each athlete’s talents together to form a cohesive unit and how being on the team helper her learn how to follow leaders and work with individuals of different skill sets in harmony.
Since graduating, Argetsinger Newman has returned home to St. Louis and now works with preschoolers. She explained that many of the communication skills she learned as an athlete have carried over to her career.
Baker-Watson and Huffman each mentioned that the “Athletic Hall of Fame” induction ceremony is a great opportunity to connect current athletes with former athletes who are true role models.
“It’s an opportunity for us to expand the network for our athletes” said Baker-Watson who mentioned how important it is for current athletes to get to see what lies ahead and interact with those who have had similar experiences already.
“I think it can be very impactful when the current student athletes hear the story of the inductees.” Huffman said, “They learn how important the relationships are…the people…the memories.”
