Greek chapters prepare for annual dance competition

DePauw’s student body ultimately embodies the idea of “work hard, play hard.” Even between big celebrations such as Halloween this past weekend and the Monon Bell game the next, there are no breaks. Correspondingly, an event called Greek God and Goddess, a dance competition between sororities and fraternities, will take place this weekend on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Chapters have been preparing for months for this one event. Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Conference have all been collaborating to arrange it. Chapters will go head-to-head, face-to face, to prove who has the best moves in the Greek community.

It is no light matter.

“Our chapter takes Greek God and Goddess very seriously,” says Sigma Chi god, Jeff Collins. “We put a lot of hard work and dedication into the dance. The last week leading up to the dance is very intense – we practice every day.”

What makes the event even more intense is the amount of secrecy. Chapters do not reveal details of their performances until the actual dance. Themes, music, and routines are all kept private amongst the chapters to ensure thrilling the audience and impressing the judges when the time comes.

“I cannot disclose too much about the actual dance. We like to surprise our fans,” says Collins. “There may or may not be flips, though.”

Preparation and practice are the keys to Greek God and Goddess. While the event is undoubtedly competitive, the real goal is to have fun and bond with one’s brothers and sisters within the Greek community.

“I think it's important to keep practice fun so everyone can look and feel happy during the performance,” says Delta Gamma goddess, Grace Harsha. “I am very excited, but I'm excited specifically to share the moment of the dance with my sisters.”

The Delta Gamma sorority has been preparing since the beginning of September for the big event.

“Everyone has been spreading the word about the event to get the entire campus excited for the big day,” says Kristin Burgess, vice president of the Panhellenic Executive Council. “All individual chapters have been working hard to put on a great performance for this weekend.”

Greek God and Goddess will take place Sunday at 6 p.m. in Neal Fieldhouse in the Lilly Center and is open to the public.
