DePauw's softball team remains perfect in North Coast Athletic Conference play after sweeping College of Wooster on Saturday.
The ladies took home two wins by scores of 5-2 and 2-0, which extended their win streak to 11 straight games.
However, after dominating their conference opponent, they split their double against non-conference rival John Carroll on Sunday afternoon, snapping that streak.
“It is a boost to be undefeated in NCAC for sure, but we have to go at every game like they're a new threatening opponent," said sophomore pitcher Emma Baldwin, "and the being undefeated is just a title to defend."
In game one, John Carroll took an early lead on a solo homer. But the Tigers were able to tie it back up in the top of the fourth inning with a home run from sophomore catcher Lauren Godden.
The game was held at a steady tie as the teams headed into extra innings.
With senior Linsey Button on second base, Godden came up big once again with a game-winning homer to claim a 4-2 victory over the Fighting Scots.
DePauw tallied nine hits in the first game, two each coming from Godden, sophomore Liz Getz and senior Haleigh Chasteen.
Game two started off with back-to-back doubles from Getz and Button to put DePauw up with a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the second inning, first-year Kat Panos hit a double that gave Gibson leeway for another point.
The Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning after senior utility player Sammi Bell walked and Getz was able to single. The ladies were both able to advance and then scored on back-to-back bunts from Button and Godden.
Shortly after, though, John Carroll clipped the lead to 4-3.
Unfazed by John Carroll's comeback, Junior Gabby Smart hit a single in the fourth prior to stealing second and third base, then scored on Bell’s base hit. This power play brought the Tigers back up to a two point lead.
Unfortunately, the Lobos were not done yet.
After a hitting a three-run homer and a preceding run, John Carroll finished out the fifth inning leading by a score of 5-7.
Although she had a strong showing, Baldwin was credited with the loss and moves to 10-8 for the season.
However, the team still remains perfect in NCAC play, an undeniable feat.
“It feels great to be doing so well in conference," said first-year pitcher Brooke Bandy. "All of our hard work has paid off and I'm glad we have clicked as a team and are being successful."
