Tigers explore strengths, weaknesses on offense in preseason scrimmage

A preseason scrimmage against Hanover College ended in a 0-2 loss for the women's soccer team Saturday.

Still, head coach John Carter says it created a good building block for the team.

Carter sees the game as a good preview of what the team is made of at this point.

"It is early in the season, and we know more about ourselves after Saturday than we did before," he said. "And that's what we were looking for."

Last season, the team struggled on offense.

"This team has the potential to be special. We just have to find a way to score goals," said Carter. "If we can create the confidence and win games and ultimately be a very special team this season."

For sophomore Paige Fehr, this is just the start of what is to come in the rest of the season.

"I think we did well and we have a lot of time to grow as a team, but it was a good preview of what we need to work on and build as a team before the regular season starts," Fehr said.

Fehr thinks that an attacking mindset is a large part of why the Tigers didn't get the result they were hoping for in their scrimmage.

"I think we need to work on our finishing and getting more shots on goal," Fehr said. "We need to have more of an attacking mindset in our future games."

The team had a few good looks at goal Saturday but could not capitalize on the opportunities.

"We have spent the last week before the scrimmage focusing on the individual aspect of the game," Carter said. "We haven't really talked about attacking or defending as a team yet."

The Tigers hope to put together the team aspects before the upcoming tournament this weekend and conference play, which opens Sept. 17 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

The regular season starts this coming Friday at the Bob Baptista Invitational tournament in Wheaton, Ill.
