This past weekend, the DePauw baseball team continued the strong start to their season by winning two of their three games at Greenville College. One of the team’s largest contributors was starting center fielder, senior Jack Thompson, who ended the weekend with seven hits, including three home runs, two doubles, four runs batted in and four runs scored. The three home run weekend matches his total from the previous season, and is one off of his total from his previous three seasons on the team combined. Thompson’s big weekend at the plate has helped him earn Tiger of the Week nominations from The DePauw.
The DePauw: What were some things you did to prepare for this season that was different than previous seasons?
Jack Thompson: As a team we really bought into the off-season training program that was laid out for us, and it is paying off. It’s making us look a lot stronger this season.
TDP: What are your personal goals for this season and what are your goals for the team?
JT: Personally I just want to do anything I can to help the team reach its goal, which is to win a Conference Championship.
TDP: How do you feel your team performed in their three games against Greenville?
JT: I thought we played well as a team, but we can always play better. We are a very talented team and we all believe in each other. I have to give credit to Greenville also; they are a great team that is going to have a great year.
TDP: What was going through your head in the third game when Greenville took a 10-5 lead in the fifth inning?
JT: I had all the confidence in the world in our team and our resiliency. We were all referring to a quote from a video we watched about the Patriots comeback in the Super Bowl. Keeping a level head was the key and it worked.
TDP: What do you enjoy most about playing sports in college?
JT: I really enjoy the friendships that we take into challenging situations and then build off of one another to win games.
Thompson will look to help the baseball team continue their hot start next weekend as they play another three games against Manchester University at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11, with the games taking place at 12:00p.m. and 3:00p.m., and a third game on Sunday, March 12 at 12:00p.m..
