Shortened on-campus dining hours leave students wanting more

"No rhyme or reason," said Steven Santo, General Manager for DePauw Dining Services regarding the selection of operating hours for the Hub and Den.

Students have expressed frustration regarding the hours of the Dining Halls this Winter Term. With the Den opening essentially only for dinner, the student body is forced to dine at the Hub or out in Greencastle. Santo said that he sees students go to off-campus restaurants during DePauw's Winter Term, as opposed to the dining options here on campus.

Freshman Adam Smith said "The hours at the Den are inconvenient because their so few dining options on campus."

Santo continued to explain the hours are basically determined by statistics looked over every year. For example, the Den previously was open for Breakfast several years ago, however business slow in the morning at the Den.

"The later the Den was open, the worse business was in the morning," Santo said. Therefore the breakfast hours at the Den were changed.

If business is bad, they reevaluate the hours. Also, Santo says they have experimented with hours. For example, last year the Hub closed at 5pm, where as opposed to this year being open until 10pm.

Santo explained, "It's a hit or miss business." For example, the biggest breakfast rush at the hub is between 9:30am to 10am, then a lunch rush around noon. However Santo added the other day between 2pm and 5pm there was absolutely no one in the hub, explaining it was like a ghost town.

In short, the dining hall hours change based on business, sales, and complaints. It is likely to see the hours change during Winter Term in the coming years, Santo said.
