“Princess Diaries 3” is soon on its way to theaters to take fans back to the enchanting land of Genovia. It's been two decades since Anne Hathaway stole the hearts of millions as the unlikely princess Mia Thermopolis. Finally, in Oct. 2024, she officially announced the return of the franchise on her Instagram: “Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️.”
While Hathaway is the only confirmed cast member, others have also expressed interest in returning. Chris Pine, who played Mia’s love interest Nicholas Devereaux in “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” shared his excitement about returning to the movie’s new season in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: “Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it. Give me — give me a phone call or an email.”
Sandra Oh, who played Vice Principal Gupta, said she would “of course” return to this role if the opportunity arises. "Yeah, that would be hilarious,” Oh said in an interview with People magazine.
Adele Lim, best known for her work on “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Joy Ride,” has been chosen to direct the third film. Lim shared her excitement: “I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core themes of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.” Her background in storytelling that focuses on dynamic female leads makes her a perfect fit for the next chapter of Mia’s journey.
Fans are hopeful the movie will bring fresh energy while honoring the legacy of Garry Marshall, the director of the first two movies who passed away in 2016.
Flora Greeson, known for her work on “The High Note,” is writing the script for the third movie. The plot details remain under wraps, but the film is confirmed to be a continuation rather than a reboot. Given the way “The Princess Diaries 2” ended, with Mia being crowned Queen of Genovia, fans can expect to see how she has grown into her royal role.
As Hathaway said, “miracles happen.” For fans of "The Princess Diaries," the return to Genovia is nothing short of miraculous.
