NRA to visit DePauw

Since its founding in 1871, the National Rifle Association has faced political opposition and has become one of America's most powerful lobbying groups.
The NRA is an organization dedicated to preserving the Second Amendment right of law-abiding American citizens to bear arms. In the political realm, a division of the NRA called the Institute for Legislative Action lobbies at all governmental levels.
NRA-U, a division of the NRA, reached out to DePauw's chapter of College Republicans over the summer. NRA-U visits college campuses and speaks to students about the NRA, the Second Amendment and the gun control debate. DePauw's NRA-U event, titled "Arm Yourself with the Facts," is co-sponsored by the College Republicans and the Trap and Skeet Club.
So far, event planners have not had anyone object to the presentation.
"This is a liberal arts school, so everyone is open-minded towards new ideas," Jake Weiner said, a junior and member of the Trap and Skeet club.
The NRA-U presentation will bring facts and figures about firearm use and the gun debate to campus and allow audience a look at the pro-gun side of the debate.
"Gun rights is more of an opinionated subject, and I think the NRA will bring a lot of facts to the table," said Sam Stahler, a senior member of the Trap and Skeet Club.
"I think it's great [the NRA] is coming," Weiner, a junior member of the Trap and Skeet Club said. "I've grown up with shooting. I know what it's about, and it isn't accurately portrayed in the media."
Information about the NRA and NRA-ILA was taken from nra.org and nraila.org.
The NRA meeting will be held Tuesday in the U.B. Ballroom from 7 to 9 p.m.
