Kenyon College rattled off six goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from the men’s lacrosse team and win the game by a score of 13-5.

Kenyon scored the first three goals of the game in the first eight minutes leaving DePauw in a hole. However, junior Ben Sherman and sophomore Steen Jorgenson scored the next two goals to cut the Lords’ lead to 3-2 with 9:19 remaining in the second quarter.

Sherman scored another goal in the second quarter off of a Jorgenson assist, but three goals by Kenyon’s Pierce Kraft were the difference in the second quarter to give Kenyon a 6-3 lead heading into halftime. First-year Myles Thompson was happy to see the team fight back after being down early.

“It shows the type of character our team has,” Thompson said. “We will always keep fighting no matter how down we may be.”

DePauw was not done fighting as they outscored Kenyon 2-1 in the third quarter off of two more Jorgenson goals. That left Kenyon’s lead to 7-5 and a chance for the Tigers to make a run at a win.

The Lords had something else in mind. Three different Lords scored to start the quarter and Chris Ferraro ended the game with three goals of his own. The disastrous 6-0 advantage ultimately gave Kenyon the 13-5 victory. A big issue for the Tigers were four penalties in the first three minutes of the quarter that led to the first four goals.

Senior Joe Ross was disappointed with the loss, but thinks the team played well for the majority of the game until the end.

It was a tough loss this weekend,” Ross said. “We played pretty well for the majority of the game, but unfortunately we self-destructed a little bit towards the end.”

Jorgenson paced the team with three goals and two assists. Sherman added the other two goals scored by the team. Sophomore Joe Garvey led the team with five ground balls and won eight of the 16 faceoffs.

“Steen Jorgenson and Ben Sherman carried the team offensively,” Ross said. “Steen’s three goals and two assists were huge. Joe Garvey also did well on the faceoffs.”

Kenyon outshot DePauw 47-37 and recorded 33 ground balls against 17 for DePauw.

Overall, Ross believes the team is looking forward to their next match and will learn from their fourth quarter mistakes in this past game.

As a team, I think that we just need to focus on playing up to our full potential throughout the entire contest,” Ross said. “We're playing with a lot of confidence, so if we are successfully able to change some of the little things, I believe that we'll be able to bounce back.”

The team takes the field next on Saturday as they host Denison University in Reavis Stadium at 3 p.m.
