Saturday's 75-67 loss for DePauw University's men's basketball team to Kenyon College goes down as yet another chapter in the team's up and down season.
On their senior night, the Tigers fell to the Kenyon Lords with a sub-.500 record during a season in which the Tigers defeated two top ten ranked teams in the country.
"Our record speaks for itself," said junior guard Frank Patton. "We have beat multiple ranked teams in country, but also have losses to teams that we should have beaten."
With such an inconsistent season, the Tigers have attracted criticism for their inability to maintain momentum.
"We have shown some signs of inconsistency, but we are working on changing that for the remainder of the season," senior guard Mike Wilkison said. "We have shown we can beat the best teams in the country. We just have to go out there and play with the same intensity every game."
The loss to Kenyon saw the Tigers fall to 16-7 in the season with an 11-5 conference record, while Kenyon improved to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the NCAC.
The visitors took control of the game and held the Tigers at bay for most of the game. The Tigers never got anything going in the first half as they struggled from three-point range only shooting 1-8 from beyond the arc. Kenyon went into halftime up by three with a 31-28 score.
The second half proved to be much closer for the Tigers as they quickly tied the game up at 35 all with six ties and ten lead changes over the course of 12 minutes. Three-pointer shots continued to be a problem for the Tigers as time after time the shots failed to fall.
Around the eight-minute mark of the second half, the Lords picked up steam and put the Tigers away.
"Unfortunately Kenyon got hot and we couldn't put out the fire," Wilkison said. "Regardless of losing to a team we are better than, we will be ready for the conference tournament and it is my job to make sure we do not show any more signs of inconsistency the rest of the season."
Wittenberg University proved to be no match for the Tigers on Wednesday as DePauw swept aside the number 15 ranked team in the nation. DePauw defeated Wittenberg 71-49. The win pulled DePauw to one game behind Wittenberg in the NCAC rankings, and both teams remained in fourth and third respectively. Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Wooster both won their games. The Tigers wrap up their regular season on Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan.
