Greencastle water under boil order

UPDATE: The boil order was lifted on Sunday.

Users of the City of Greencastle’s water are under a boil order, effective immediately. This was announced by Mayor Sue Murray just after noon today.

A boil order is given by the government or health authorities when a community’s drinking water could be contaminated by pathogens and is unsafe to drink without first being boiled.

Greencastle has been undergoing a series of water expansion efforts, and the new tank is not expected to be in working order until Monday. A disinfecting process will occur over the weekend, a step made necessary by the system changes.

Murray indicated the water is currently being drawn from a standpipe instead of the tank, so although it may be fine the city does not want to take any unnecessary risks.

“It’s a precautionary thing,” Murray advised in a Banner Graphic article. “We don’t want to take any chances.”

DePauw students—avoid drinking water from the fountains as well as the faucets, unless it has been boiled, until advised otherwise.

Said Murray: “We will let everyone know when we can lift it.”

DePauw will be giving away two bottles of water for each student unable to boil their water tonight in the Hub. They have ordered additional water in case the boil order persists.
