Froyo shop to serve Depauw, Greencastle

Mouths across Greencastle are beginning to water as the promise of a cool creamy treat grows nearer.

By the end of November, Greencastle will have a new self-serve frozen yogurt joint, Green Apple Frogurt.

Due to the popularity or frozen yogurt on other college campuses all over the country, a local business owner said he has decided to explore this sweet new venture.

"I remember what it was like to be in college and how important it is to have a hangout where you can eat and relax," said owner Shoaid Shah.

Shah has worked in business for eight years as the owner of the Clark gas station in Greencastle and a Marathon gas station in Cloverdale. A combination of nostalgia for his college days and confusion over a recent bank statement prompted him to learn more about frozen yogurt.

Puzzled as to why the words "Red Mango" were so prevalent on his daughter's credit card bill, Shah did some research.

Red Mango is a frozen yogurt store his daughter frequents on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. Shah said he "has always wanted to open something else" in Greencastle, and found the perfect opportunity in frozen yogurt.

Red Mango has found much success on college campuses, and Shah believes a frozen yogurt shop is exactly what DePauw needs.

He hopes to introduce a "contemporary"  feel with his store. There will be free wi-fi, big screen TVs and funky fiberglass furniture that is both kid- and adult-friendly.

"You have never seen chairs like these, and they are comfortable too," Shah said.

Shah believes even the best product is "nothing without the perfect environment," but that this product will not disappoint.

There will be five to six machines, each with two flavors of fresh Yo Cream Yogurt, a brand of frozen yogurt owned by Dannon. After customers fill their cups with yogurt, they will choose any of forty-five topping choices, ranging from fresh fruit to candy. Customers will be charged based on the weight of their yogurt and toppings. Green Apple Frogurt will offer yogurt and toppings 39 cents per ounce.

Even with the recent closing of The Monon restaurant and the state of the economy, Shah said he feels confident about his business venture.

"There is nothing like this place at DePauw right now," Shah said.

Students are looking forward to the opening. Freshman Sam Mullennax is excited for a new hangout location.

"I think it will be great to have a fun place to hold meetings and hang out where you can also eat frozen yogurt," Mullennax said. "It's also in walking distance from campus, which really helps."

Freshman Erin O'Brien will try frozen yogurt for the first time when Green Apple Frogurt opens.

"This is the first I've heard about this new frozen yogurt place," O'Brien said. "We didn't have one in my hometown, so I'm excited to try it."

Shah said he wants to make Green Apple Frogurt the next great student hangout. He highly regards student opinions and suggestions because he wants to make Green Apple Frogurt a part of the DePauw experience.
