The first 11 minutes ended up determining the victor in DePauw's field hockey match against Earlham Tuesday.

The Tigers scored five goals in the first 11 minutes against Earlham College, extending their winning streak to three with a final score of 6-1.

DePauw is now 2-0 in NCAC competition with both of those wins coming from the field hockey team.

"I was really impressed that we came ready to play from the beginning," said head coach Gina Preston on WGRE's Tiger Talk Wednesday night. "It was something we always talked about but hadn't really seen this year"

Senior Kimberly Trainor put the Tigers on the board just 47 seconds into the contest on an assist from junior Bridgette Shamleffer.

Shamleffer notched a goal of her own 50 seconds later and Trainor made it 3-0 soon after.

"It's not an individual sport," said junior Margaret Ellis on Tiger Talk. "You can't have one player who is doing everything."

Preston said assists were key in the win against Earlham

"We talked in practice on Monday about doing the simple things and working together to create goal scoring opportunities," Preston said.

Trainor notched a hat trick with an assist from Ellis just eight minutes into the game. By the time the Tigers rounded out their scoring for the night, six goals were on the board, five in the first half alone.

For DePauw, four different players made their way onto the scoring sheet.

"I think the team really came out and gave a strong performance," Preston said.

The Tigers outshot Earlham 22-1, and held a 12-1 edge in penalty corners.

Preston said Earlham isn't the team the Tigers are worried about in the conference.

"I think Denison is going to be a really strong team this year," Preston said. "But Wooster and Wittenberg seem to be the two powerhouses in the NCAC."

Ellis said the team isn't worried about other schools' reputations.

"We have a lot of players that don't really have this preconceived notion of the teams," Ellis said. "I think we are just going to not worry about where they stand or their statistics and just go out and try and play our game"

Coach Preston said the team's goal for the season is to win the conference tournament. To do that, DePauw will need to be one of the top four teams at the end of the season.

The Tigers will play their first home game Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan at noon on the football practice field between Blackstock Stadium and the Indoor Track and Tennis Center.

"We love to play at home. We have a great crowd for our home games," Preston said. "The girls like to be here and play in front of their friends and their families."
