Delta Upsilon and Alpha Phi came out on top once again during this past weekend’s Little 5, which was an fun and safe weekend for the DePauw student body, despite the rain.

Things were looking gloomy on Saturday morning, with the much-anticipated Little 5 races looking doubtful to some students. However, to the excitement of Little 5 fans, the only inconvenience was a change in the times of the races and the addition of a rain jacket. The women were off at 1 p.m., and the men at 2 p.m. Despite the weather, there was a large turnout to support the riders.

The Little 5 races were full of both personal and group victories. Caroline Maloney and Aaron Mahoney came out on top at the Street Sprints down Anderson Street on Friday. Mary Satterthwaite, riding for Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Mateusz Kosciuk, riding for Delta Upsilon, were the fastest in the women’s and en’s criterium races on Saturday. As for the overall score, Alpha Phi, who won last year’s Little 5 as well, and Delta Upsilon, who has won nearly every year for the past 24 years, triumphed once again.

Ellen Tinder and Ben Kusber, the co-chairs of the Little 5 Steering Committee, said that the weekend was a success, bad weather aside.

“I may be biased, but I would deem Little 5 2016 as a success,” Tinder said. “We had participation at our events throughout the week and the races on Saturday ended up being competitive and exciting, despite the rain.”

Director of Public Safety Angela Nally said the weekend as largely uneventful due to the rain. However, there were two hospital visits Saturday due to excessive consumption of alcohol and there was one arrest by Excise police. Most of the incidents that occurred over the weekend revolved around vandalism. South quad saw a drinking fountain and fire extinguishers being pulled off the walls and a game table thrown outside, as reported by Campus Living and Community Development. There was also damage to the Inn at DePauw.

Nally said no interactions occurred between Public Safety and individuals on the streets, and there were no reports of sexual assaults. With the exception of the riders, six of whom crashed during the races on Saturday, the weather was on Public Safety’s side this weekend.

First-year member of Delta Upsilon, Joe Westropp, reflected on his first ever Little 5: “I really enjoyed competing this year. The people made it really great and, though the weather was shotty from time to time, I think everyone who participated had a really great time. I look forward to doing it all again next year!”
