On March 8, the world celebrated International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of women across the globe. The DePauw community embraced this occasion with a series of events that brought students together in solidarity and celebration.
The celebration kicked off with a collaboration between Women in Computer Science (WiCS) and Feminista, two prominent student organizations on campus dedicated to promoting gender equality and empowering women. On Thursday, March 7, the UB Living Room buzzed with excitement as students gathered for an afternoon of creativity and camaraderie. Over 50 tote bags awaited eager hands, ready to be transformed into personalized works of art. Participants adorned their bags with vibrant designs while enjoying delicious foods, making it a delightful gathering for all.
Following this, the Campus Activities office organized an event on Friday, March 8, inviting students to make animal plush toys in honor of International Women’s Day. Amidst laughter and friendly banter, attendees embarked on a fun challenge: they were encouraged to name a woman who inspired them before selecting their plush toy. This simple yet meaningful activity prompted reflection on the influential women in people’s lives and served as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and empowering women.
Adding to the atmosphere of appreciation and admiration, the Vietnamese Students Association (VSA) joined the festivities by distributing over 70 bouquets of flowers and cards across campus. These tokens of affection were available for students to take for themselves or to give to the women they cherished, spreading love and gratitude throughout the community. The campus was teeming with heartfelt gifts that served as a visible reminder of the unity and support for Women's History Month.
The events at DePauw underscored the significance of International Women’s Day, not only as a day of celebration but also as a call to action for gender equality and empowerment. By coming together in solidarity and appreciation, students demonstrated their commitment to uplifting and honoring the women who inspire them. As the celebrations draw to a close, the spirit of unity and support continue to resonate throughout the campus, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of women’s strength and resilience.
