Cheers, jeers and tears

In this latest entry in a long-standing annual tradition, the editorial board reflects on a semester gone by. We break it down into a nuanced and meaningful trio of reactions — cheers for the triumphs, jeers for the baffling and tears for the troubling. Happy almost-summer and keep reading this fall.

Cheers to two days of no class for the first time in decades during the "DePauwCalypse" ice storm in February. And cheers to an admirable and courageous administrative and staff response.

Jeers to one candidate running for DePauw Student Government president and executive vice president. We're proud of and excited about our new executives, but believe electoral competition is healthy for any community.

Cheers to this semester's relevant, engaging and unique Ubben lectures from Lee Hamilton, Nicholas Carr and Jimmy Wales.

Tears for Simple Logic's destruction. We'll miss those huts.

Cheers to Greencastle winning the Stellar Communities Grant. We can't wait to visit Indiana's next great college town, whether in three years or 10.

Jeers to bad behavior at greek formals. When will students learn how to behave off campus?

Cheers to Environmental Fellows. Between better campus engagement, institutional investment and recruiting, we think this will have a positive, transformative influence.

Tears for Delta Chi fraternity's closure, the end of a chapter we'll miss and an unfortunate chapter in DePauw's greek life.

Cheers to DePauw's switch to the North Coast Athletic Conference. While we're still waiting to judge the move's overall value, we're excited about lower transportation costs and better competition.

Jeers to the weather. The ice storm was only the beginning of an exceptionally cold and wet semester.

Cheers to student government's success in passing more white papers than ever this semester and helping shape campus discourse with students' voices and opinions.

Tears for study spaces closing at night. We'd still love more options for 24-hour studying.
