Not even three months into 2025, 13-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga has had quite a year.
At the 2025 Grammys, she and Bruno Mars won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their smash hit “Die With a Smile,” which will be featured on the upcoming album. The Grammy-winning single also became the fastest song ever to reach one billion streams on Spotify. On Jan. 27, she announced her sixth solo studio album Mayhem, set to release on March 7. On Oct. 25, 2024, she released the first single from the new album called “Disease.” The most recent single, “Abracadabra,” was released on Feb. 2, along with its accompanying music video.
The music video, though recently released, has already accumulated nearly a whopping 40 million views. Though she did not officially perform it on stage at the Grammys, she premiered the music video during a commercial break. In an interview with Elle, Gaga explains the importance and meaning of the new track.
“I wanted this song to be about resilience in a way the song ‘Disease’ was not. With this song, I wanted to crack open what it means to persevere and explore the metaphor of perseverance on the dance floor. For me, anyway, it has always been the place where I try to improve myself as a human being,” Gaga said.
In the video, Gaga is accompanied by a plethora of backup dancers on a wide open dance floor. During some parts, Gaga and the dancers are dressed in all white, while in other parts they wear black while she wears deep red. The song itself—much like its predecessor, “Disease”—is pure dance pop.
She also explains that Mayhem is “utter chaos! It breaks a lot of rules and has a lot of fun. It’s about following your own chaos into whatever cranny of your life it takes you to.” Her influences for the sound include 90s alternative, electro-grunge, Prince and Bowie melodies, guitar and attitude, funky bass lines, French electronic dance and analog synths.
The last time that Gaga released a pop album was nearly five years ago with her 2020 release, Chromatica. Fans have mused that “Abracadabra” sounds “nostalgic,” as it certainly sounds like a track off of The Fame Monster, Gaga’s 2009 album. After experimenting with other genres—including jazz in her last release, Harlequin—Gaga is finally returning to her roots.
Only less than a month until the highly anticipated new album. In the meantime, “Disease,” “Die With a Smile (feat. Bruno Mars)” and “Abracadabra” are available on all streaming platforms.
