On Monday night at the Senior Showcase and Academic Awards Convocation, President-elect Mark McCoy announced the winners of two prestigious DePauw awards given to graduating seniors. Sheridan Schulte won the 2016 Ferid Murad Medal and Craig Carter took home the 2016 Walker Cup.
Upon hearing his name called, Carter’s friend had to nudge him for him to realize it was his own name.
“I was extremely surprised. I actually didn’t stand up right away,” Carter said.
In his speech, Carter didn't say much except that he was honored and thankful to receive this award.
"At the end of my freshman year, with my grades and my attitude, I wasn't supposed to be here," he said in between rounds of applause. "I just want to say thank you, again."
Carter thanked a handful of people, as well as DePauw Student Government. "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be here right now," he said in his short speech.
Carter later expressed a number of times how appreciative he is for those who have always pushed him and been there for him throughout his career at DePauw.
“I have never done anything by myself,” Carter said. "There is always someone to help me out. There’s always been someone in my corner pushing. ...It’s easy to read about stuff that I’ve done; knowing the behind scenes is more important.”
In regard to how this award will affect his future, Carter said it would not change anything.
“It was just a nice bonus,” he said.
When asked about all the work that led him to this honor, Carter noted that the work someone puts in should not be selfish, but rather for the better of others on campus.
“We shouldn’t be doing good things because we want something in return,” he said.
When Schulte was announced as the Ferid Mural Medal winner, she was in a state of shock and disbelief.
“At first, I wasn’t sure if I misheard or imagined my name,” she said.
Schulte continued to express her gratitude for her professors and peers.
“It was a very surreal moment when my professors ran over to me to give me a hug after the ceremony, and I am filled with gratitude for all that my professors and friends have done for me here at DePauw,” she said. “I definitely would not have had the same opportunities if it weren't for them.”
When asked about how this honor will affect her future, Schulte said she intends to do everything she can to live her life up to the Medal's standards.
“I truly do appreciate this honor and all that the medal stands for, and I will to continue to strive academically in my graduate studies and career in medicine and public health so that I can uphold the ideals of the Ferid Murad Medal.”
