These five independently-owned businesses, tucked away in downtown Greencastle, offer more than meets the eye for DePauw students.
At Old Grandad's Used Books, owner Danny Mesecher and his wife work hard to provide students with popular and well-kept books. Just across the street, Treasures on the Square has provided one-of-a-kind breakfast and lunch fare to the Greencastle community for six years, as well as unique crafts, candles and gift baskets.
Students who want to give back to the community can shop at Rescued Treasures, just around the corner from Treasures on the Square. Profits from the resale shop benefit the Humane Society of Putnam County. The store offers a variety of unique items from clothing and accessories to books and household items.
To conquer a craving for homemade desserts, Almost Home, a restaurant owned by Gail Smith, is the place to go. In addition to offering students a variety of lunch and dinner specialties, Almost Home's Swizzle Stick Bar provides a friendly environment in which older students can enjoy a drink with friends. Chief's, a steak, barbecue and shrimp restaurant provides a relaxed environment in which students can enjoy comfort foods of all types.
Just a short walk from campus, downtown Greencastle is full of shops and restaurants ready to offer students a comfortable atmosphere and some interaction outside of DePauw.
