Come every February, love seems to always be in the air, especially for fans of professional football. Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA is set to host Super Bowl LX, with the NFC champions, the Seattle Seahawks, taking on the AFC champions, the New England Patriots.
The Seattle Seahawks, led by second-year head coach Mike Macdonald, have played unlike any other team in the NFL this year, especially concerning their defense. Seattle entered the playoffs with a strong 14-3 record and sustained its strong play in the postseason, notably with a 41-6 win over San Francisco in the NFC divisional round and a hard-fought 31-27 over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship game to punch a well-deserved ticket to the Super Bowl.
Statistically, the defense has only allowed a league low 17.2 points per game, and a central reason why Vegas favors them coming into the game. Seattle’s front seven, led by veteran Demarcus Lawrence, is known to pressure the quarterback without giving a heavy blitz. However, the secondary has faced challenges due to injuries, including their star rookie Nick Emmanwori, who is dealing with ankle issues in practice. The offense’s success this year can mostly be attributed to Seattle’s elite receiver room, namely Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who leads the league in receiving yards this season. However, lest doubters forget quarterback Sam Darnold’s surprising performance this season, who has seemingly been on a career redemption arc as of late.
The New England Patriots have been one of the most surprising teams this season, led by first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. Vrabel has coached the Patriots through an unforgettable turnaround season, especially when compared to last year, when the Patriots went 4-13. Coming into the playoffs with a 14-3 record, New England defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 16-3 in the AFC wild card round, a 28-16 victory over Houston in the AFC divisional round, and a gritty 10-7 win over Denver in the AFC championship game for New England to play in the Super Bowl.
The Patriots have a young but talented offense this year, led by quarterback and for-certain MVP Drake Maye. Other star offensive players include Stefon Diggs, who is the Patriots leading receiver in 2025, and breakout rookie running back Trevoyn Henderson. Defensively, New England has been opportunistic and disciplined all this season, always seeming to step up in crucial moments. Key defensive players include Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who contributed to a key interception in the AFC championship game, and defensive tackle Milton Williams, giving high pressure to the line while simultaneously providing run-stop ability.
Both teams have met each other in the Super Bowl before, notably Super Bowl LXIX, with the Patriots’ dramatic goal-line stance to win the game. Are the Seahawks able to make up for their troubled past, or will this Super Bowl mark the resurgence of a new Patriots dynasty as it did for Tom Brady in 2002? The stakes in this game have never been higher.
The Super Bowl Halftime show will be performed by Bad Bunny, with Charlie Puth singing the national anthem. The typical NBC Sunday Night Football crew, Mike Tirico and Chris Collinsworth, will begin commentating at 6:30 p.m. EST on Feb. 8.
